Wireless Network Names Don’t Tell You Much

It’s been my experience that the names of wireless networks do not tell you much about where they are. I do not use wireless network names as default names for anything.

For example, here are the wireless networks I can see in my apartment right now are:

2WIRE985
APOGEE
B&G Enterprises
gobias
Hookers
linksys
NETGEAR
orange
Paris205
Skynet
UFA

I don’t even think that Paris205 is a room number, because I can’t find an apartment in West Campus called Paris. Wifi names are generally generic, or whimsical, and sometimes offensive.

Some business do have informative network names, like “METRO EXPRESSO BAR”, while others are a bit odd “Seton Family Access” (a local hospital) or pedantic “restricted.utexas.edu” (the entire UT-Austin campus).
